War Horse Puppet

We were watching the Edinburgh Tattoo. This is the finest piece of puppetry that Peter has ever seen. And look at the scale of the puppet! This is worth watching again and again. Beyond this, all Peter can say is "Wow".

Here is a 2 minute clip of this from the Edinburgh Tattoo, shown last night and also today:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01fmwln

Bike Ride for Forgiveness

It was very nice to go out on our bikes again. They did not miss a beat and took us there as though we'd been riding every week. And as usual we stopped at Azurea Cafe for a cuppa before returning. But not before Barb read aloud right through one book. Admittedly a small one but worth listening to on self-forgiveness by Timothy Keller. Very good for our souls to be reminded, from a foundational Christian perspective, how the celestial court has been adjourned and shut down. We won't be called to the dock. Making a defense for ourselves before God's assessment of our lives is a wasted thought, wasted worry, and a useless theological argument. Because unless Jesus has paid the penalty for humanity, for the world, we are out, out of the family of God, out of the kingdom of God, removed from God. Something amazing had to have happened 2000 years ago for this to be so. We act out of love and service because of Jesus' defense of us not the other way round, such as trying to earn acceptance before God, doing good stuff, getting in on the strength of our so called purity, generosity or suffering. Hey, our bike ride involved a helpful theological reading leading to our discussion about it that lasted quite a time. A divine moment no doubt. A special morning in our lives.

Stevensons Falls

We visited Stevensons Falls near Marysville on a recent day outing. The falls are quite spectacular at night with the floodlights on it. Peter remembers seeing it at night with the church youth group in the 90's. What took our breath away was the scaring from the Black Saturday bush-fires still upon it. Even though it happened almost five years ago (7 February 2009), the evidence was plain to see from all directions especially into the valley. There were just so many tree skeletons standing as reminders of the inferno that came. Those trees that survived have re-sprouted in a grotesque way, not creating the canopy that used to be there. The result is a heavy undergrowth with too much access to sunlight and gawky, stalk-like trees with a close green fuzz, if they still have life. It is sad to be confronted with this specter and to realise that this "look" will not change for at least a generation, maybe two. The fire was too ferocious for redemption to come quickly.

Yea Wetland

We have visited this place a few times now. It has a pleasant walking path best done at dawn we think. When we have walked it the sun was up and fierce. Nice still. There were signs of flooding, hence the board walks on and off along the path. A huge task to keep trim for the carers of the land. We post a few of the many signs along the way for your interest plus a few snaps of our visit. It was nice to visit Yea again after about 18 months.

Christmas Bike

Jasper got a Giant for Christmas. That's a bike brand. He is getting used to the different breaking system. No longer is there a push back hub break. And there are six gears to negotiate. So Jas and Peter went on an excursion about Lillidale Park, even past the dike and down along the forest path. This was a special grandfather/grandson time, shared a little here. Ah yes, Poppa had to jog along some of the time just to keep up!

Christmas Beach Cricket

Lillidale Park has had a beach installed so we were able to do the Christmas beach cricket thing. That was pretty fun. So many great catchers were missed because of the rocks, the water, the grassy slope, or it came too quickly - all very funny to watch. Daniel and Simon held the longest unbroken batting partnership. Everyone got in shots and bowling. Fancy doing beach cricket so far inland in Melbourne suburbia!

Christmas in the Water

Lillidale Park has a lake held there with the help of a long dike. This is an additional reason for doing Christmas Day there - the water. The kids had a ball, including a few of the older ones. Below is a picture collection of that part of the day.

Christmas at Lillidale Park

The decision to do Christmas Day at Lillidale Lake Park was rich and rewarding. It was  a perfect day. Below is a pictorial series that hopes to capture the flavour of the day.
