School Cross Country

On the last day of first term, on a warm and dry day, Tallarook combined with two other country schools for their annual school cross country. Peter had a 'track marshal' position at the top of one of the slopes. The ten year olds ran for two Kms and the older students ran for three. The slow inclines were tough for the kids. The hot and dry air made it harder. Lots of kids had to stop running and walk the remainder of the circuit. But all in all it was a successful day and the best ten runners of each category now go on to District Cross Country in about four weeks. The venue, the Pylong Golf Course made the scale of everything an experience in itself. The views were breathtaking.

Tallarook Excursion to CERES

Peter had the good fortune of being able to join a Tallarook school excursion to CERES in Brunswick, Melbourne. The students learned about the Wurundjeri people, the original owners, and enacted a Dreamtime story of Tiddilic the Frog, getting dressed up as native animals, trying to make the frog character (their teacher) laugh. Afterward they learned about recycling waste, anything from food scraps right through to material that won't break down for thousands of years. They also did a short walk along the nearby Merri Creek. The CERES program was well presented and a lot was packed in. Well done to all who put in the effort.

Whittlesea Towers

The kids were invited to build towers with wooden pieces predominantly the same length to make that as easy as possible. Some towers were built but not very high. Most of the students wanted to make box shapes. Fair enough. If that is what they want that is the way it goes. There were enough pieces for nobody to feel compromised.

HALO Pelicans at Whittlesea

After missing a few Mondays, one a public holiday and another because of an injured back that Peter had to heal from, he finally held another woodcraft club. This time the kits were an adaption of the HALO Pelican using 13 pre-cut pieces. The "how to assemble" sheets helped tremendously. Most of the kids were able to push on and make theirs in the time allowed. It was pleasing to see. It was great having another adult in the room helping to interpret the assembly instructions.

Funky Gliders

We went to Gembrook to link up with birthday people in one place, birthdays that hover around this date. Uncle Simon gave the grandsons model gliders to fly. The designs were durable given the battering they received that afternoon. Our granddaughter received a crystal growing kit. She will have loads of fun doing something that fascinates many people. Following the glider throwing we did stop for chocolate moose cake, very yummy indeed. A nice day to think back on.
