Mekong Delta

We visited the northern edge of the Mekong Delta and crossed to two of the islands, first to sample the fruit grown there and then to have a meal at a large private house. This tour stands out as an excellent experience for us as hopefuly the pictures below will show.

Our first stop.

Vietnamese Apricot flower, different to ours and often used as an image in the coming New Year celebrations for 2013.

The insect on this flower is an Asian bee, oh so different to the Italian ones we are so used to in Australia.

Part of the package was the presentation of four songs, the last one a welcome to Vietnam song. The girls were locals singing. Their real job is tending the fruit orchards.

The singers were supported by different stringed instruments, some very traditional.

Then it was into one of the channels winding its way through the island. The tide was out so our driver had to be careful not to get stuck!

These two pictures are in the wrong order. When we got to the coconut plantation (below) along the channel, we watched the locals making coconut lollies. We baught quite a few packets of them after tasting a few.

A little further on, at the plantation owner's place we and a few other tour groups were all treated to a fine lunch of local and very fresh produce. The fish was called Elephant Ear fish.
