Carrot Success

This is for the record that we have had significant success at growing carrots this year. Peter seeded a part of our garden in the (hot) January and they were covered by layers of blankets which he kept wet daily. On the tenth day he removed the blankets and watched the delicate shoots recover from being squashed and survive. He thinned them out to reduce overcrowding and kept the water up. Ten days was importent because a patch what had its covers removed after eight days failed to thrive and all died. There could have been other factors. The soil had had plenty of food scraps compost the previous season and it seemed a little sandy. No extra sand was added. We have been pulling them up all through the winter. We know that there will come a time as the weather changes when the remaining carrots will start to become 'woody' as they grow to seed. We might keep a few for that and make sure we have enjoyed the rest as nutritous food. Their bite is crisp and their taste strong with a little bit of 'zing'.

A variety of other seeds in this one... fingers crossed.

Unlike further north we have had reasonable rain.

And the tomatoes are still coming from last summer growth!
