December Woodcraft

 

This 'Santa sleigh' design was a first for woodcraft club (in its 10th year). Pine lengths were ripped and docked including some bandsaw cutting for the curves, and presto, Peter had kits for 18 takers. As it turned out, he ought to have made 28... except that enough time to prepare was always a factor. So it was a lively club in the last week of term and the kids who came enjoyed it. A few of the young ones had trouble with so many pieces and managing the glue, so for those Peter helped finish.

November Woodcraft

 

This post is a catch up one reflecting on the later half of November where Peter provided boat shapes for the kids to do something with. The designs were many and varied. Even given that, some kids still wanted a flat board to work on for complete freedom of expression. All good. Whatever works. 

Woodcraft Freebuild

 

'Freebuild' means that students are given complete free freedom to find what they can in the wood scrap boxes and make whatever comes to mind. There was a structured 'kit' to go by if they were that way inclined, one of a simple house and many students preferred to make these. These photos are taken over a number of weeks showing how the return to woodcraft club was proceeding. So far so good and the glue might last until the end of term all being well. 

Tallarook Mechanics Institute Born Again

Peter has watched with keen interest the rebuilding of the Tallarook Mechanics Institute in the main street of the town. Sadly the 127 year old building burnt to the ground on Saturday/Sunday night of May 5/6, 2018. Insurance was honoured and architects were commissioned to design a replacement. It took a while to get going though. The locals made it very plain that the new building had to look much the same as the old one and so the result was an interesting mix of innovation and tradition. The pictures below show the magic of the old and tell the construction story of the new, up to pictures taken just days ago.
